Buttons

As the children often seem to be paying attention to everything but the stories and fingerplays, I often wonder if story time at the library is a worthless endeavor.
Fall story time has been done for about 3 weeks now.  But recently one of my shy story time attendees (who has never spoken to me) came in with her mom to pick out books.  She walked right over to me, smiled, and said "Mrs. Althoff, we have the same shirt."  Hmm.  Hers was blue and mine was green.  Color blind?  No.  She pointed to her buttons at the neckline and said, "See? We both have buttons."  Together we counted out our three buttons and smiled at each other.  Another bond formed.  I love my job.
